Directive of Marine Equipment
On 1st January 1999 the Directive 96/98/EC of the Council of the European Union concerning marine equipment (EC Directive of Marine Equipment – MED) became effective. This directive is designed to guarantee the free flow of trade with this equipment, subject to compliance with an equal safety standard within the EU. Today it is possible for any vessel carrying the flag of a EU member state, to use or install equipment, which has been certified by a labelled station of any EU member state without further checking. In addition to the EC prototype tests, there are required inspection measures, which have to be carried out by a notified station. These measures could be e.g. sample inspections according to module F or quality management systems according to module D or E.
